THE Christmas ice rink in Glasgow’s George Square is set to be turned into a breathtaking assault course next month, as Scotland hosts the Red Bull Crashed Ice event for the first time.

Glasgow will host the UK qualifier for the worldwide event, which sees competitors skate over, under and around obstacles against the clock.

Around 100 racers are expected to take part, with winners of the Glasgow heat qualifying for the European final next year.

Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Red Bull on this incredible event. It will deliver a spectacular centerpiece for our Glasgow on Ice celebrations and a hugely entertaining event for families of all ages.

“The energy and competitive spirit of Crashed Ice makes for a breath-taking spectacle and we’re looking forward to welcoming participants from across the UK and beyond.”

Red Bull Crashed Ice is at George Square on Friday 13 December from 5pm. Racers can register for the event at www.redbullcrashedice.com/registration
