West Virginia primary: Clinton holds convincing lead over Obama

DEMOCRATIC presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is expected to beat front-runner Barack Obama in West Virginia's primary election contest today, polls showed.
But the results from the Mountain State, which has only 28 delegates, will have little impact on the overall race for the party's presidential nomination and Mr Obama has already turned his attention to November's general election battle against Repu
blican John McCain.

As Mrs Clinton campaigned for every vote in West Virginia over the weekend, a poll by Suffolk University found she had a 60%-24% lead over the Illinois senator.

But Mr Obama, 46, will not be in the state today, choosing instead to attend Senate votes in Washington DC before travelling to Montana, which will hold its contest on the last day of the US primary season on June 3.

He will even return to states which have already held their primary elections later this week as he focuses on a potential general election campaign.

Mr Obama took the lead over the former first lady among superdelegates for the first time yesterday as he extended his overall lead in the race, gradually inching his way towards the party's presidential nomination as the US primary season nears its end.

He now has the support of 1,866.5 delegates, compared with Mrs Clinton's 1,697, the latest Associated Press figures showed. A total of 2,025 delegates are needed for the party's nomination.

If you want to see more "Pork Barrell" spending and economic incompetence on capitol hill, elect Hillary or Obama! How utterly pathetic this country has become to see that these two "power hungry" liberals are the best this country can offer for such a high poltical office!

balder,

firstly, where did THAT come from?

Calley was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Nixon ordered his release, pending appeal, after one day... however upon further review, his sentence was reduced to 20 years. and he was placed under house arrest pending his appeal... nixon reviewed the case, and decided that there would be no further action from the executive branch...

Lt Calley indeed appealed his conviction... (as is anyones right to do)... but was denied access to vital testimonies to congress... and the case was dropped, and calley was released... he served 3 1/2 years of his 20 year sentence... Calley was never pardoned...

get your facts straight badder before you go shooting off your mouth!!!

It wasn't the "army" who intervened. It was one army helicopter pilot, Hugh Thompson, and his crew. Here is his obituary.

mike - across the pond,

amusing 13/05/2008 16:18:33
there are 217 elected delegates left in the "primary" season... after today that "pool" number drops to 189

Hillary needs 327... simple math, Hillary cant make it on the backs of elected delegates.

obama needs 159 (156 if you drink the CNN KoolAid, 154 by RealCleaPolitics) this means for the "superdelegates" to be off the hook selecting BO for the DNC ticket... BO needs 73% (or as little as 71%) of the remaining elected delegates.... now that number drops by the minute with every superdelegate that goes for BO... unless BO picks up 60-70 more superdelegates before 3 June, the primaries will NOT select the DNC offering, it will be superdelegates that put BO over the top...
7

Sandi,

And a small correction to the article. Michigan and Florida will be counted and the number of delegates needed is 2206.

Now, Sandi & others I'm just not going to let the US Army be insulted in this manner. In the days of Vietnam all the soldiers were indoctrinated by the Army, backed up by the army's official policies & procedures, that they should not follow illegal orders. When the helicopter pilot landed he was doing what he was indoctrinated to do. Would you expect that he get on the radio and ask someone above?

It was as I said. There were many players in the incident. They all worked for the army. and only one of those players went out of his way to get those people killed.

here's a nice article from the Washington Post about the democrat race.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/12/AR2008051203014_pf.html

People are starting to wonder why it is that Clinton is continuing. People are in fact speculating that she's doing it to support John McCain. Because she's attacking Obama and her campaign is deep in debt. She's lent 11 million to her campaign. But if she does not win the nomination, then it will be illegal for her to continue fund-raising. Nobody knows exactly how much money her campaign owes for all the bills she's incurred, but its thought to be $20-25 million. She's likely to pocket the money she raises from here to the convention and stiff everybody for huge bills when she loses.

I don't think Hilary will be Obama's Vice President because its not in Obama's interest to have her. A lot of people don't like her.
10

Sandi,

San Diego 13/05/2008 17:53:25
Wally,

An ABC poll this week has 64% of Democrats saying that Hillary Clinton should stay in the race. Of course she should. This race is not over, and while it's more likely that Obama will win, he hasn't yet. He has not been able to "close the deal". If he is the second coming, why not? He would love to have Clinton drop out, then he might be able to "close the deal".

He has huge problems in a general election scenario. Hillary Clinton does not. She would win in November, obama will not. The superdelegates are supposed to be looking at that, not at the amount of money the Obama campaign gives them, or his promises of being on his short list for VP. Supposedly, there are at least 20 people on the "short" list LOL!

He's doing all he can to downplay the huge win Hillary Clinton will get today in W. Virginia, and next in Kentucky. She will also win Puerto Rico. That is not going to be "split" as the Obama campaign likes to say.

The US Army was not to blame for Calley's behavior, but they also whitewashed it for some time. What I do think is that Thompson, who finally received a medal for his courage, did not necessarily do the "army thing", but did do the right thing. He and his crew deserve praise for this, not the US Army.

What the superdelegates must decide is which candidate is the most electable. But superdelegates are politicians and have the collective brains and backbone of a warm chocolate eclair. So they will nominate Obama.

Barak has real problems with Jewish voters, working class white voters, and older voters. How do Barak's problems play out? He can write off Florida, Ohio, and West Virgina. These are states Bush carried that should be in play. For Obama, they will not be. Obama could have problems in New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and even Pennsylvania, all of which he must win.

This is supposed to be a Democrat year. But the Democrats need to pick up some red states. And they cannot afford to lose a single blue state. Obama is rolling toward the nomination largely because he has won states that will almost certainly go for McCain in November. He is the weaker candidate in the states the Democrats must win. That is a problem.

In 1976, Ronald Reagan challenged incumbent Gerald Ford for the Republican nomination. Ford scraped by and he did so by winning primaries in blue states. In the general election Ford lost to Carter largely because Ford could not carry the Southern states that are essential to a Republican victory. Reagan carried all the Southern states in the primaries. He was a far stronger candidate in the South than Ford. But the Republicans nominated the candidate who was weakest in in their critical states. Now the Democrats are about to do the same thing.

sandi.... 13/05/2008 18:48:07
the delegates WILL be split...

hillary will get about 60% of the WVa 28... or in the neighborhood of 17 or 18 BO gets 10 or 11...

Puerto Rico: has 55 some... hillary will take a smaller majority... maybe as many as 30-32... obama 23-25

KY gets 51: hillary will probably take 28-30 of those.. obama 21-23

Oregon has 52: obama takes around 30-32 hillary gets 20-22

montana has 16: obama takes 9 maybe 10 hillary 6-7

S dakota 15 obama takes 8-9 hillary 6-7

bottom line hillary wins 3 states gets 107-116 delegates obama 3 and gets 101-110 BO loses anywhere from 3-15 delegates off his lead... at the end he'll have 1972-1981 committed delegates... the clock has run out... BO will have a lead of 160-170 delegates...

if they seat florida & michigan with "half delegates"... hillary will make up 70-80 delegates but that STILL leaves her behind by 80-100 at the convention....

last I saw there were around 243 "super-delegates" left to be counted

counting MI/FL... for hillary to take the nomination away... the super-delegates would have to go over 2-1 for hillary... THAT is a TALL order...

if you throw out MI/FL she can lose about 44-53 super delegates... that translates to about 80% of the remaining super delegates breaking her way... thats not a tall order... THAT is a miracle....

hillary fell victim to the GHWB '92 faux pax... didnt take her opponent serious enough soon enough... and will fall just short....

Your synical attitude is marring your own objectivity in examining the truth concerning this incident. Yes, I observed "war crimes" while serving in South East Asia. On one occasion, while on recon, we came accross a small patrol of Marines. They had come accross one of their guys who had been tortured and killed by the Viet Cong. His private parts had been cut off and wired into his mouth, then he was hung upside down in a tree, where his bowels had been cut out.

As for "war crimes" committed by us, I observed none! Its unfortunate that you have never had the back bone to fight in a war! Its easy to sit back and pass judgement on others, like an armed chair quarterback, who risks nothing but running his mouth and passing gas.

I can only presume that you favor that witch Hillary, who desires only one thing and that is serving the desires of her own belly. She is all lip service! A typical politician with a lying spirit. She is in this race for only two reasons, i.e., EGO and POWER! She has the moral values of a prostitute who sells herself for gain.

If she is elected expect more taxation and more government control in your life. But of course you're probable support of her is more personal, she is a female, but that is all you two have in common.

As for Obama, well, he's got his own bucket of fish to fry. In truth, put him and Hillary in a bag and shake 'em up real good, then dump it out, they will both hit the floor together, for there is little difference between the two of them! They both have sold their souls to the devil for a shot at being the next overly glorified, too much exalted president. But for you half wits out there who sit in awe and worship these temporary residents of the white house, I pity you!

I am neither Republi-con or Demo-crap, but I have to say that even though McCain is a little too far left of center for me, I do honestly admire the man for some of his nobler qualities. He is not boisterous, he doesn't blow his own horn, and he has not, so far, waged a smear campaign like Obama and Hillary Dillary!

While he was a prisoner of war being held at the Hanoi Hilton, he showed deep compassion in aiding his fellow inmates. He demonstrated good chritian values in his daily life.

MGA of Reagan Country,

when you say that Obama has problems with jewish voters I think you are under the influence of propaganda. First of all jews are less than 2% of the US population. Second of all Obama polls among the American jews at a 2-1 leader over McCain. Just as Hilary Clinton does the same. The American jews prefer Obama or CLinton at a 2-1 margin over McCain. That is what polls show. The American jews are very different fromt he neo-cons. The neo-cons are jewish, but they do not represent the American jews at all. A Pew Research poll a couple of years ago documented that the most anti-Iraq war ethnic group in America are the American jews. They oppose the Iraq war at about a 3-1 margin. For America as a whole it is the Americans oppose the Iraq war by a 2-1 margin.

There are many who post on this forum who do not beleive in the teachings of christ, and there are those who are "lip service" Christians. There are those who are Christians, not ignorant pawns who follow whatever spirit that moves them.

The reason I bring this up is to demonstrate clearly that a true Christian would never vote for candidates like Hillary "Jezebel" Clinton or Barrack "lip service" Obama. For they uphold the shedding of innocent blood (Abortions) and Homosexual Unions. Obama and Clinton have already established their position on these issues. Therefore, I can unequivacably declare that Obama is a LIP SERVICE Christian. He's trying to be all things to all people.

Hillary, well, she wouldn't even be classified as a "luke warm" christian! She has the same disease her husband has...she's a compulsive liar! Her ego is so enlarged that they don't evan make hats big enough to fit her head. Her and Billy both have one common enemy..their uncontrolable tongue!

But in truth, no true Christian would vote for either of these ego maniacs. Try counting, if you can, the number of times both Hillary and Obama have lied to the American people! How can you people really trust either one of these two left wing bleeding heart liberals?
