Sarah Palin - Attractive, earnest - and clearly out of her league?

Published Date: 01 October 2008
WHEN Sarah Palin was introduced as her party's vice-presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention, it was as if a sudden ray of sunshine had appeared to brighten John McCain's path to the White House.
The Alaska governor's down-to-earth credentials as a mother of four and the fighting rhetoric of her acceptance speech scored early points with voters.

But barely four weeks later, the inexperienced Ms Palin – a self-proclaimed pitbull with lipstick – is finding the political landscape just as chilly as the Arctic winters she knows so well. Well-publicised gaffes have cost her valuable ground as she faces the potential minefield of tomorrow night's vice-presidential debate with Democratic opposite number Joe Biden.

"The buzz on Sarah Palin has gone all bad," said George Stephanopoulos, formerly president Bill Clinton's communications director and now a respected senior political commentator for ABC News.

"When you become a punchline in politics, it is one of the worst things that can happen," he added, referring to the way her foreign policy naivety was lampooned on the Saturday Night Live sketch show.

Ms Palin's perceived fumblings, including a contradiction of Mr McCain, are so grave that a rapid-response team of senior Republican advisers was imposed on her to give her intensive cramming on issues certain to arise in tomorrow's debate in St Louis, Missouri, such as the economy and Iraq.

Her stumbling, lightweight performance on CBS News in only her third national interview since she accepted the nomination also set alarm bells ringing at Republican headquarters.

Pressed by presenter Katie Couric on her foreign policy credentials, Ms Palin explained that Alaska's "next-door neighbours are foreign countries" and that when Russian planes invaded US airspace, they came to Alaska. That prompted calls from conservative commentators for her to stand aside for a more experienced candidate.

Ms Palin is "attractive, earnest, confident … (and] clearly out of her league," wrote Kathleen Parker in the National Review. Others, such as foreign affairs analyst Fareed Zakaria, see her as "dangerously ignorant and unprepared". Perhaps her biggest slip came at the weekend when she told a voter in Philadelphia she would support sending US troops uninvited into Pakistan.

"If that's what we have to do stop terrorists coming any further in, absolutely, we should," she said in an exchange caught on TV cameras. Two days previously, in the first presidential debate, Mr McCain mocked Democratic candidate Barack Obama for saying the same thing.

Mr McCain dismissed the episode as "gotcha journalism" against Ms Palin, but as Ms Couric pointed out, Ms Palin was not speaking to a reporter but to a voter with every right to ask pertinent questions.

Many Republicans see Ms Palin as an asset whose natural talents as a communicator are being stifled by campaign staff forced on her by Mr McCain.

Tomorrow's meeting with Mr Biden gives Ms Palin the opportunity to shake off the criticism and re-present herself as a worthy candidate, said Professor Allan Louden, an expert in presidential debates at North Carolina's Wake Forest University.

But he added: "Any slip will be used against her."

Rival has made fair share of gaffes too

DEMOCRATIC candidate Joe Biden made gaffes of his own during preparations for tomorrow's vice-presidential debate in St Louis.

In claiming that lessons from the 1929 Great Depression could help offer a solution to the economic crisis facing the US, Barack Obama's running mate said: "When the stock market crashed, Franklin D Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened'."

Unfortunately for Mr Biden, Herbert Hoover was president at the time. And television broadcasts in the US did not begin for another seven years.

Then earlier this month, Mr Biden was caught on camera asking a wheelchair-bound politician to stand up to receive recognition from the crowd at a rally in Missouri.

But his staff are confident of a strong performance during the debate against Ms Palin, whose approval rating among women has fallen from 65 per cent to 43 per cent in less than two weeks.

Anyone, anywhere, talking long enough is gonna screw up. They're gonna say something that the other party is going to jump on with both feet and a baseball bat. That's the nature of being human. That being said, I am having one hell of a time wraping my head around the phrase "President Palin". Oh, Dear God (or gods as the case may be).

While it is true that if any of us had a microphone stuck in our gobs 24/7, we'd be bound to say something ridiculous, Ms. Palin simply appears too parochial.
However, the big question is if this really matters to voters who get turned off by slick lifelong windbag bureaucrats like Biden.

The last person, the very very LAST person these bunch of idiot Democrat politicians want in charge of their future is Sarah Palin.
They hate her for a reason- Sarah Palin is a reformer and restores ethics. Ethics in government?
Duh, let me think, I can have the Great One who is neck deep in this financial corruption, or
the chance for ethic reform?

PBS is more than a bit to the left wing but the interview was before she was VP pick. Listening you'll realize why Governor Palin is the most popular governor in the country- with a 79% approval.

Just imagine; McCain gets elected, and promptly (as expected) drops dead. Palin becomes president.

At the same time there is an economic crisis, a pre-emptive missile attack by Israel on Iran, and Putin invades the whole of Georgia, whilst singing yankee doodle.

Palin is quite clearly as thick as ten lavvie seats, and is making America look stoooopid to the entire world.

If America elects Palin, they deserve to be laughed at by everyone. I mean, why not just elect Paris Hilton - she's pretty and dumb too?

How can you take a country seriously if it elects someone so stooopid to be president???

Look people of America, your own media hides this from you, but compared to the rest of the world, all your election options are right wing. Republican is extreme right wing verging on fascism, and the democrats are right wing.

The notion that the democrats or any part of american media is left wing is utterly ridiculous. Seriously, the rich fat cats (big business) who run the USA have done a great job through media they own, to convince Americans that anything other than republican is verging on communism.

For example, just under half the entire population of the United States has no health care at all, even working people can't afford it. The American dream.

Seriously, America is an extreme right wing country. Geez, they probably think the conservative party in the UK is verging on communism.

Americans need to get out more, and see the world, as they have a very, very narrow view of the world.

Hey who knows, maybe Palin will do a bit of travelling, seeing as how she got her very first passport last year.

There must be far more experienced and qualified women in Congress that could do the job of VP. Palin was a Mayor of a small hick town of 7000, which didnt last long, then somehow she became Governor of Alaska for 2 years and that seems to qualify her in the Rublicans eyes to be the next vice president, what a joke!
The VP candidate debate on Thursday should be interesting, allthough should be noted that the democratic vp candidate is also prone to some gaffes

You backward thinking, closed minded folks just can't stand it. You keep digging and digging, hoping to turn up even more negative half truths and distorted opinions to influence others to see things your way.

Everyone who speaks will make mistakes from time to time. Why does it matter? It doesn't.

You fail to realize that most successful leaders do not stand alone in the decision making process. To keep throughly abreast of things, they consult with those who specialize in the various areas and rely on learned opinions as they give directions or manage their areas of responsibilities.

Initial "experience" is not meaningful. Adjustments have to be made constantly as events unfold and on- going adjustmensts and the assistance of others is always necessary.

The person on the street as well as many journalists and commentators do not fully understand the issues and those who are more knowledgeable do not go around constantly with their heads in the sand.No one can be totally knowledgeble in every area.

It's ok to react, make statements and evaluate but it is not generally acceptable for one to judge unless capable of doing so with at least some personal credentials to support oftentimes distorted idiotic conclusions.

John Z in Edinburgh is absolutely correct. Speaking as one who regularly visits friends and family in the USA, it never ceases to amaze me how the media over there portray any dissention from the Pro-War, Pro-Gun, Pro-Life, Pro-unfettered market, pro-religion as 'far left', verging on communism. It is also remarkable that an otherwise hugely likeable and intelligent people have such a narrow, insular and aggressive view of the rest of the world. When one considers the depth of intellect to be found at their great universities - Harvard, Yale (GWB notwithstanding), Princeton, Stanford, MIT etc etc it is is indeed astonishing that the best they can come up with is Sarah Palin, a backwoods hick who has to cite Canada as a foreign visit and believes in witches and biblical fictions.

It will be interesting to see the results of the frantic "information download" being conducted on Sarah Palin in the past couple of weeks.

As of a few days ago, she could only remember ONE court case in US history and could not name ANY newspapers that she read, when speaking with Katie Couric.

I simply do NOT understand the depth of ignorance that would not only admit, but FLAUNT, such utter stupidity. I would like to hear how this could possibly be positive for our country. . . .

What an embarassment to our country and to all women who wish greater authority, equal pay and due respect for all of their efforts.

I think we can expect a more profound display of gibberish from Sarah than we have heard thus far. . . . a "thoughts in a blender" style of delivery

Clinton did not get her "@ss kicked". She got more votes in the primary that Obama. That is not even losing. There was no honest roll call vote, so nobody knows who really won. As is his way in elections, Obama, with the help of the DNC, bullied and threatened until his opponent dropped out. That's the only way he can win elections. That is why his campaign is orchestrating the constant attacks on Sarah Palin. These can, for the most part, be traced back to a firm in Chicago whose business is doing exactly this, taking a little bit of truth ans twisting it to look very bad, and who are closely tied to David Axelrod, Obama's campaign guru.

As for Palin being "out of her league", I would love to see Obama be asked the same questions she has had to answer. She has valuable experience and she is running for VICE president. Obama, with less relevant experience, is running for president. He would not be "a heartbeat away from the presidency", he would BE the president. A VERY scary thought.

OBAMA interview with Charlie Gibson, June 2008

How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?
How does it feel to “win”?
How does your family feel about your “winning” breaking a glass ceiling?
Who will be your VP?
Should you choose Hillary Clinton as VP?
Will you accept public finance?
What issues is your campaign about?
Will you visit Iraq?
Will you debate McCain at a town hall?
What did you think of your competitor’s [Clinton] speech?

PALIN interview with Charlie Gibson, Sept. 2008

Do you have enough qualifications for the job you’re seeking? Specifically have you visited foreign countries and met foreign leaders?
Aren’t you conceited to be seeking this high level job?
Questions about foreign policy
-territorial integrity of Georgia
-allowing Georgia and Ukraine to be members of NATO
-NATO treaty
-Iranian nuclear threat
-what to do if Israel attacks Iran
-Al Qaeda motivations
-the Bush Doctrine
-attacking terrorists harbored by Pakistan
Is America fighting a holy war? [misquoted Palin]

What's the point ?

Is Charlie Gibson the only "filter" through which
we are to judge any of these candidates ?

Are you saying that his questions were easier/different with Obama ? Gibson is not the sole source of the growing conviction that Sarah is simply not the right person for the job.

I believe that Gibson's questions were asked to guage her knowledge regarding current news and general concepts. . . .the answers to which I would think that YOU YOURSELF would know, being a reader of The Scotsman. I am quite sure that YOU could have answered those questions. . . . why couldn't she ?

Why is Obama so "scary" to you ? That he lacks the "experience" of a George Bush or a Dick Cheney ?

To all those that prattle on about her not being qualified for V.P.

What left wing idiocy.
Clinton was a two bit Governor of ARKANSAS. Arguably the nations most backward and corrupt state. ( Whitewater??) Osama. Just what has he done??

Biden seriously old news....and has always been dumped in any presidential race he runs in.

Sure the UK's leaders are dynamite..Joke Mconnell in Scotland, and his sidekick Alexander..Brown..HA ha ha..

C'mon get real. All that runs the world is money. Not ideolgy.

How many votes did Reagan, Clinton, Schwartzeneger,Trudeau here in Canada get because of their ability to ACT or simply be photgenic.

The left simply do not get it. The majority of Americans totally distrust Washington. Get used to it.

Bill Gates remember left Uni cause he was bored..it sure hurt him..

It should be fun..

"The woman hoping to become the first female vice-president offered excruciatingly poor answers on foreign policy and her understanding of the $700bn rescue plan.

One of Mr McCain's problems is that high-profile right-wing commentators are now attacking him for choosing an inexperienced running-mate who has not grown into the job. The best that columnists such as The New York Times's David Brooks could offer is that the Alaska governor brings something "fresh and telegenic" to the ticket. There was more damning commentary from The Washington Post's Carl Bernstein, who wrote: "No presidential nominee of either party in the last century has seemed so willing to endanger the country's security as McCain in his reckless choice of a running-mate."

Amended headline:

'Sarah Palin - Attractive, earnest - and clearly out of mind:

The US department of the interior has listed the polar bear as a threatened species, saying that two-thirds of the world's polar bears are likely to be extinct by 2050 due to the rapid melting of the sea ice.

Alaska says it opposes the endangered label partly because the listing would "deter activities such as ... oil and gas exploration and development."

The threatened species status might also impede the building of an Alaskan natural gas pipeline, which Palin has called the "will of God". She said she believed the polar bear population was "abundant, stable and unthreatened by direct human activity."

PBS anchor Gwen Ifill, who will moderate Thursday’s only vice presidential debate. Try as she might to deflect questions about her impartiality, her biases — and her conflict of interest — are clear. But don’t you dare breathe a word about any of this. You know what will happen if you do…

RACIST!

Sidenote: TVNewser reports that Ifill has broken her ankle, but she’s still going to do the debate. But will she disclose her conflict of interest? Inquiring minds want to know.

Ask the Commission on Presidential Debates if she will acknowledge her conflict of interest: 202-872-1020.

And here’s the e-mail address of Janet H. Brown, Executive Director of the Debates Commission: jb@debates.org

Hopefully, their email system works better than the House.

Tons of readers recommend that Sarah Palin open her debate remarks by congratulating Ifill on her book and asking her to tell everyone the title.

A debate “moderator” in the tank for Obama
by Michelle Malkin

My dictionary defines “moderator” as “the nonpartisan presiding officer of a town meeting.” On Thursday, PBS anchor Gwen Ifill will serve as moderator for the first and only vice presidential debate. The stakes are high. The Commission on Presidential Debates, with the assent of the two campaigns, decided not to impose any guidelines on her duties or questions.

But there is nothing “moderate” about where Ifill stands on Barack Obama. She’s so far in the tank for the Democrat presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out.

In an imaginary world where liberal journalists are held to the same standards as everyone else, Ifill would be required to make a full disclosure at the start of the debate. She would be required to turn to the cameras and tell the national audience that she has a book coming out on January 20, 2009 – a date that just happens to coincide with the inauguration of the next president of the United States.

The title

The title of Ifill’s book? “Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.” Nonpartisan my foot.

Ifill’s publisher, Random House, is already busy hyping the book with YouTube clips of Ifill heaping praise on her subjects, including Obama and Obama-endorsing Mass. Governor Deval Patrick. The official promo for the book gushes:

No surprise there bill, most of the media has been in the tank for Obama. Then again so is Hollywood. If you are rich and do not have to work hard for your money you're typically going to be a left wing radical.

Absolutely hilarious how all the right wing loons are getting upset at the fact that the media has the audacity to ask Palin tough questions.
What's concerning for those who think a potential POTUS should actually be semi-competent is not just that she either didn't know the answer or contradicted her running mate, but that that she looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights and rambled incoherently. How would she fare against the likes of Putin?

Not that they ask Palin, who will not be president and will not be making all those decisions, but that they have yet to ask Obama, who would be president, the same questions.

Also that the media still ignores completely Obama's good friends Rezko, Ayers, etc. etc. This is the man who would be the president.

Palin could quite easily be the president. Any VP could, but it's probably more likely with her than with any other VP in recent years. Journalists are entitled to ask tough questions. As are voters, and some of the questions that have tripped her up have been asked by ordinary voters out in the street.

I'm glad you are in my camp.
Obama is a coniving, lying, crook. Experienced in rhetoric, manipulation, dishonesty, and I'd rather have the Gambino "family" in the White House than the Obama "family"
It is incredible the number of people who think he is the one to be President, they are either blind or naive, or just plain desperate for anyone who is not connected with the current administration. What catastrophe awaits us?

"If America elects Palin, they deserve to be laughed at by everyone. I mean, why not just elect Paris Hilton - she's pretty and dumb too?" LOL

Actually what if Biden was replaced with Paris Hilton.
Now that would be an interesting debate....

Palin Vs Hilton.......

That would really bimbo up the race...

My tip..... Paris Hilton to win......

Maybe next election the republican rednecks could double up with a Palin Hilton ticket???

I wonder how many votes they'd get???

They'd probably win the election.

This just in, Mom and Pop America couldn't give a fiddler's fvck about the intrigue and nuances of international politics.
Americans are the most inward-thinking, self-possessed people in the world.
It's hard to imagine, but they don't care.
That's why Katie Couric's "gotchas" have not changed the course of history despite what some on this thread have deluded themselves into believing.
Ronald Reagen was hardly a rocket surgeon either. But he turned out to be the most popular modern-era American president. (Sorry JFK)
And he turned out to pretty good internationally as well.
Simple stuff. Like "tear down that wall."
Sarah Palin connects with Americans on so many levels.
So she's a dumb brunette. So what.
Oxford educated Bill Clinton played the dumb card for most of his time in the Whitehouse.
Heck he didn't even know when he was getting his leg over.

John McCain on NPR this morning:
NPR: Given what you've said Senator, is there an occasion where you could imagine turning to Governor Palin for advice in a foreign policy crisis.
MCCAIN: I've turned to her advice many times in the past, I can't imagine turning to Senator Obama or Senator Biden cuz they've been wrong, they were wrong about Iraq, wrong about Russia..
NPR: But would you turn to Governor Palin?
MCCAIN: I certainly wouldn't turn to them, and I've already turned to Governor Palin particularly on energy issues and I've appreciated her background and knowledge on that and many other issues.
NPR: Does her energy qualification extend to the international energy market?
MCCAIN: Of course. Of course. That's what it's all about. It extends to a broad variety of issues from her worldview to threats that we face, to radical Islamic extremism, to specific areas of the world. I'm very proud of her, and proud of the knowledge and background that she has.

He first met her in July??
