AN ARMED robber held up bank staff as they arrived for work yesterday in the car park of a Bank of Scotland branch in Dundee.
The masked attacker confronted staff with a handgun at about 8:20am as they arrived at the Strathmartine Road branch.

Police said the robber fled when he realised that the workers had nothing to give him.

A teacher helped thwart the robbery w
hen she came to the aid of the bank's manager after she heard a scream for help. The manager had been walking up to the bank when she was threatened.

The teacher then gave a statement to police, along with a local engineer who ran to her aid.

The armed robber walked away calmly but empty-handed. He got into a black 4x4, made a U-turn and drove off north along Strathmartine Road.

Although badly shaken by the incident, the bank manager was unhurt.

Kevin Vials, who lives opposite the bank, said:

"There are always people outside the bank, but you don't expect anything like this to happen.

"The bank has CCTV and my house gets picked up in it, so I'm sure they'll be able to get a pretty good idea of what happened."

A spokesman for Tayside Police said: "A member of staff was in the car park outside the bank at about 8:20am when a man came up to her.

"He was about 6ft tall and wore a dark coat and dark trousers. It's possible he was in his forties.

"The man spoke briefly to the woman before producing a weapon – what appeared to be a hand gun."
