Polar trek over for Briton
A BRITISH adventurer has abandoned her attempt to become the first woman to trek solo and unsupported to the North Pole after falling through ice and injuring herself.
Hannah McKeand, 34, a former theatre manager from Newbury, Berkshire, had hoped to walk, ski and swim the 478 miles to the Pole in 60 days.
But on Thursday, only 13 days after setting out from Ward Hunt Island on Canada's northern coast, she had a "narrow escape" after falling into an 8ft ice hole.
Left in great pain and with limited mobility, she took an hour to get out, expedition manager Steve Jones said.
After resting and taking medical advice, Ms McKeand was airlifted from the ice yesterday and flown to a remote Canadian government station on Ellesmere Island.
