AN ARMY commander who led forces to victory in a key battle for a Taleban stronghold in Afghanistan was yesterday made a CBE.
Brigadier Andrew Mackay, 51, received notification of his award in the Operational Honours List.
The Edinburgh-based officer was honoured for his work leading British troops in Afghanistan. He commanded more than 7,000 British and multinational troops as the officer in charge of Task Force Helmand, in Afghanistan from October 2007 until April 2008.
He planned and oversaw the re-capture of Musa Qala, the last town in Helmand province to be held by the Taleban, last December.
Born in Elgin, the brigadier was a police officer in the Royal Hong Kong Police before joining the Kings Own Scottish Borderers in 1982.
He assumed command of 52 Infantry Brigade, based in Edinburgh Castle and the city's Redford Barracks in 2004.
