Scotland has changed irretrievably in the last 30 years, and is unrecognisable from 80 years ago. That process has invariably been hesitant, amid resistance from Scottish society's leaders regardless of where they sit on the political spectrum. And almost always in the face of outright hostility from the media. If this space is willing to acknowledge the reality of a changed political landscape historically, and deal with today's tricky issues without turning a blind eye to the changes Scotland has already undergone, it can offer a positive contribution to an increasingly urgent debate. But if it reverts to type, it will just become another time-consuming exercise for already hard-working journalists who might better devote their energies to finding out the facts about London's relationship with Scotland post-oil. I hope the former is the case -- and that time is still available for the latter wish also. I won't be back until Scotland resolves its identity crisis -- whatever it's called, the outcome clearly cannot remain the status quo, but let's hope some original thought on what the transition leads to -- that has Scotland's interests at its heart, and London's secondary -- can flourish in this space. If Bank of Scotland has acted as a wake-up call to this newspaper group (as if it needed one looking at circulation and advertising figures), I for one am keen to see this space avoid slipping back into the sort of easy slumber offered by Glenrothes. Viewed from Paris, as opposed to London, things could be very different indeed. They can't be worse.

Jobs,schools,hospitals,law enforcement-these are what we care about.Most of us don't give a flying fig for all the independence arguments.Ever since devolution was first mooted the media quickly latched on to the fact that this would create new jobs for the boys and girls of that industry which particularly in the press was dying on its feet.We are one of themost governed and legislated parts of the world and all we have to show for it is a grossly inflated public payroll which is a constant drag on the wealth producing part of the country-not only in the cost of it but in the constant silly law making which is produced as self justification.

A fine idea this "Steamie". It will be interesting to see which parties will be active in Scottish politics ten years from now and which ones just part of Scottish History.

I fear you could be right. I find it by noting it down under favourites in my browser but have not yet found the link.

Jings, that was quick. Now if you can get the link in the same place it would be perfect. I like the idea of current comments in the steamie and historical comments from the columnists. A bit like Scottish history in the making without relying on historians giving their opinion fifty years down the track.

Has D Maddox just arrived in this world,My father served in the British Army during the Palestine Mandate trying to keep the peace between the ethnic citizens and the Stern gang ie Jewish Terrorist,so who realy is the culprit here, Not the British,not the French, and God forbid not the Americans,who all encouraged the Jewish State to steal land belonging to Ethnic now deprived Palestines

What about GAZA! For anyone who is interested make a contribution to Amnesty International or ANERA both of whom are working to help the Palestinians. Don't be put off with calls of anti semetism. From what I now see, It is clear why the Arab world has long protested Israeli brutality, now we can all see it for ourselves. Israel sees a larger war as being in its favour, hoping that the USA will support it. They must be stopped or we will all suffer for it.

Regarding the Dunfermline Building Society, I'm not surprised they've gone down. I've been a customer for more than 10 years, but I've had a lot of trouble in the last year as a result of poor communication/responses from them to questions I've been asking. It's been a case of 'the rubber ear' and I've developed a sense that they were in denial, almost deliberate denial, it seemed, about my enquiries. I hope I get my money back!

I am a Cpl in the Royal Logistic Corps based in Bulford, and yes scotland has changed over the years for better and for worse. Scotland has changed for the worse by allowing Miniority groups to dictate to the majority what should be legal and what should not, the smoking ban in my opinion is unforgiveable as it was forced onto the public by a minority. Surely in a dmocracy thats if my home country scotland is a democracy the majority rules.

There is also the subject of Palestine and Isreal. Both sides are in the wrong and no matter what happens blowing people is not right however isreali soldiers being allowed to get away of bull dozing homes are wrong. The palestinians felt sorry for the people of Isreal all those years ago and unfortunately the isrealis have instead of showing their gratitude have shown how unselfish and ungrateful they truly are.

what about all these politians (exuse the spelling please) that have been discovered ripping us off with our tax?
each of them aught to be jailed for theft, that is all they have committed in my books, if the normal man or woman in the street was caught stealing from their employers, they would have been found guilty of emezalment
I was going to have a vote in the next election, I won't be bothering, the lot of them in the government are too time losers that lies and cheats on us the ordinary people in the streets

Whatever the dark and devious ways of Scottish politics the justice minister is to be congratulated on his decision in the Megrahi case. Scotland is after all a part of Christendom. He showed remarkable restraint in not crowing over a Christian country showing mercy to a Moslem terrorist, and in not pointing out that since the US justice system appears to have no concept of Mercy, but only of punishment and retribution,Scottish Law and Civilisation has something worth emulating.
After all:-
The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That, in the course of justice, none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much
To mitigate the justice of thy plea;
Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice
Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there.

If scotland becomes independence it will be a good thing in a way for national pride but lets be honest Alex Salmond is anti-defence and if he was to declare independence then what.

I am a Cpl in the army and what is there for me in scotland if he declares independence. you join the army to have a good career, to see the world and to serve your country and do something worthwhile. If he gets his way I would be stuck in scotland 365 days a year twiddling my thumbs.

Plus the fact we would not have an army we would have a defence force.

I dont think he realises what he is thinking, I mean lets take a look at this seriously he says independence and then get rid of the nukes, boy that is great you have pakistan,iran, india and isreal with nukes and he want to get rid of them.

I tell you what I guarantee you that if we got independence tonight, not one scottish soldier in the british army would give everything they worked hard for just to be a member of a defence force.
