London 2012 Olympics: Schoolchildren will see Eric Liddell’s story on screen

SCOTTISH schoolchildren are to be shown the Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire to make them aware of the story of one of Scotland’s greatest Olympians, the runner Eric Liddell.

Alex Salmond announced that the newly digitally remastered version of the film would be made available to all Scottish schools to promote the achievements of Liddell.

The First Minister announced the move, which he said would help inspire young people to participate in sport, after a meeting in London yesterday with Lord Puttnam, the producer of the film.

Mr Salmond said: “I am delighted to announce that the new edition of Chariots of Fire will be made available to every school in Scotland.”

Lord Puttnam said: “I think it is fantastic, it’s highly appropriate and the timing is brilliant.

“The remastered version is beautiful, so I am absolutely delighted. The key is the discussion that takes place afterwards about this extraordinary man.”
