London 2012 Olympics: Almost a gold for Michael Jamieson

Scottish swimmer Michael Jamieson said he was “delighted” after taking silver in the 200m breaststroke final last night - missing out on gold by a few inches.

Spectators in the Aquatics Centre roared on the 23-year-old from Glasgow as he was only denied victory by a new world record set by Hungarian swimmer Daniel Gyurta in a time of 2 mins 07.28 secs, only 0.15 seconds ahead of Jamieson.

The Scot had previously become the eighth fastest swimmer in history over the distance when he set a British record of 2:08.20 in the semi-finals to qualify fastest for last night’s final. This had followed him setting a new Scottish record in earlier rounds.

Jamieson smashed his own British record again in last night’s final. He said: “I am so delighted. I knew I had a little bit more to give. It’s so much easier with the crowd behind you. I ran out of pool space a bit at the end but I’m absolutely delighted with the silver.

“I’ve had so many messages it has been unbelievable. I was desperate to get on the podium to repay them.”
