Ecuador profile: Close ties to the US despite poor UK relations
Sitting on the north-west coast of South America, Ecuador is a country with 15 million inhabitants located between Peru and Colombia.
The country is run under a presidential system of democracy with presidential elections every four years and an executive and a legislature consisting of a single chamber National Assembly.
The current president is Rafael Correa Delgado. In 2008, he severed relations with Colombia after Colombian troops attacked a Colombian leftist rebel camp in Angostura, just inside Ecuador’s border with Colombia. Relations between the neighbouring countries have since been restored.
Although the relations between the UK and Ecuador are severely strained, the South American country has close ties to the US.
