Woman dies after being hit by lorry

A WOMAN was run over and killed by a lorry yesterdayas horrified shoppers looked on.

Elizabeth Neil, 48, was crossing a main road in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, when she was struck.

It is thought the driver of the truck did not stop at the scene immediately as he did not realise he had hit someone. However, he was later traced and has been interviewed by police officers.

Mrs Neil, from Blantyre, had been visiting the South Lanarkshire Credit Union office in the town before the accident.

It is the second tragedy to hit her family after her father Thomas passed away, aged 68, a few months ago.

Two first aiders from nearby shops and a passing nurse tried to save Mrs Neil by giving her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation at the roadside.

The accident happened at around 10:40am on Glasgow Road in the town.

One onlooker said: “The woman had just been in the credit union office and stepped out on to the main road at the traffic lights when she was hit.

“A woman from the office ran out and started giving her first aid at the roadside along with two other people.

“After a few minutes paramedics arrived and they took over.”

Strathclyde Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for witnesses.
