Two teenagers killed as car hits trees

TWO teenagers have died in a crash after their car collided with a telegraph pole and two trees.

The 19-year-olds died when their Renault Clio left the B717 Benhar Road in Shotts, North Lanarkshire, at about 1:50am yesterday.

Two others were injured. A 20-year-old is described as being in a serious but stable condition and a 17-year-old is thought to have a broken leg.

Strathclyde Police said the vehicle was travelling south on Benhar Road when the driver appeared to lose control of the car, and it careered across the carriageway.

The 19-year-old front-seat passenger died at the scene, along with another 19-year-old man. The two other men were taken to Wishaw General Hospital.

The crash was the second fatal road accident in a week in the west of Scotland. Scott Prior, 20, from Dumbarton, and Mark McColl, 24, of Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, were passengers in a Peugeot van which was travelling southbound on the A83 near Cairndow, Argyll. Both men died when their vehicle was involved in a collision with a lorry being driven north at 4.30pm on Tuesday.
