Scottish trains revamp: How the money will be spent
A breakdown of how the money allocated to improving Scotland’s railways will be spent
SCOTTISH RAIL SPENDING 2014-19
£5bn total comprising
£3bn on maintaining rail infrastructure such as tracks, signals and tunnels (2009-14: £3bn):
2014-15£639m
2015-16£664m
2016-17£664m
2017-18£672m
2018-19£684m
£1bn subsidy for ScotRail franchise (details to be announced) (2009-14: similar)
£1bn on improvements to network, such as electrification of main Edinburgh-Glasgow and associated lines to Falkirk Grahamston, Dunblane and Alloa by 2016, and re-opening of Borders Railway by 2014
Spending will include:
£100m on Caledonian Sleeper upgrade (£50m provided by UK government)
£60m to improve journey times and punctuality
£30m to encourage more freight to be carried by rail
£30m for new and improved stations (already announced)
£10m to accelerate the closure of the highest risk level crossings
£10m to develop future projects
Current ScotRail passengers
81.1m in 2011 – nearly one third more than in 2004
