Georgina Sellyn and Jonny O’Mara bow out of juniors competition
THERE was no luck for Scotland’s leading juniors yesterday as both went down to defeat in the first round of their respective singles competitions. Georgina Sellyn from Glasgow was beaten 6-2, 6-1 by Antonia Rattner of Germany, and Jonny O’Mara from Arbroath lost 6-2, 6-2 to Jordan Thompson of Australia.
“It was disappointing, unbelievably disappointing, because I trained great for it,” O’Mara said. “But I don’t think you can train for being in this position.
“You can train on the practice court and want to win. I went on court and tried too hard to win and obviously it was not even close to my best performance, so it was frustrating.
“Hopefully I will be better the next time. There were quite a few people watching and you learn more from your losses than your wins. That was quite a painful loss so hopefully I can learn from it.”
The 17-year-old, who has been coached for some time by Judy Murray and is now based at the National Tennis Centre not far from Wimbledon, was playing in his first major. He could soon be playing in his second, at the US Open, as his ranking is close to automatic qualification.
Away from the juniors, while Andy Murray was frustrated by the rain, another Scot was able to complete his match in the mixed doubles. Colin Fleming and his Taiwanese partner Su-Wei Hsieh had been 4-3 up in the last set against Brazil’s Andre Sa and Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova when play was called off on Saturday evening.
They made short work of what remained of the contest, ending up 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 winners.
