Heriot’s 37-5 Boroughmuir

Heriot’s were rewarded for their endeavours on the pitch when they took all five league points with a clinical display built on searing pace throughout the side.

Scorers:

Heriots – Tries: Hill, Maltman, Penn, Osazuwa, Goudie. Cons – Wilson (3). Pens: Wilson (2).

Boroughmuir – Try: Swanson

And, adding gloss to a result that moved the Goldenacre side into the top four in the RBS Premiership was the success of a marketing campaign that meant the match was watched by almost 2,500 spectators.

Heriot’s coaches Phil Smith and Steve Lawrie had mused during the encounter that their side had produced an almost perfect performance. And few Goldenacre regulars would contradict that view, while many newcomers must surely have been convinced of the entertainment value in club rugby at the present time.

For the visitors, this latest defeat leaves no margin for error. Bonus-point wins in each of their three remaining matches could yet stave off relegation, but their grip on a place in the top flight is looking increasingly insecure.

The match was finely poised at 10-5 after a keenly contested first half, with Jason Hill touching down for a Heriot’s try, converted by Graham Wilson, who also added a penalty, before Boroughmuir battled back with a try from Jamie Swanson.

Wilson then kicked another penalty before the hosts opened out to devastating effect when Michael Maltman powered over. He was joined on the score sheet by Mike Penn, CJ Osazuwa and Colin Goudie with tries executed at impressive pace, while Wilson landed two of the conversions to complete a satisfying afternoon for the home side.
