British and Irish Cup: Former Scotland team-mates clash at Gala
Gala welcome Pool Six leaders Moseley to Netherdale this afternoon in the British & Irish Cup, with two former Scotland team-mates aiming to guide their sides to victory.
In Gala’s dugout will be their head coach George Graham while the Moseley forwards coach is David Hilton. Both played prop for Scotland at times during the 1990s, and their re-acquaintance is just one facet of what should be an intriguing match.
In the Maroons’ previous home match in the cross-border competition they put in their best performance of the season to see off London Scottish back in October before losing away at Llanelli after a crazy first 20 minutes left them a mountain to climb.
English Championship strugglers Moseley have defeated Llanelli and London Scottish so far, but in the matches they shipped 26 points and 37 points respectively and Gala will try and use their attacking weapons to trouble the defence at every opportunity.
Gala start with the same XV that was edged out at Ayr on league duty last week while Scotland Under-20 hooker Russell Anderson and teenage prospect Danny Owenson return to the bench.
Stirling County host Welsh side Bedwas in Pool Two, also looking to record their second victory in the event.
Byron McGuigan and Mark Bennett are released by Glasgow Warriors and take their places in the County squad while Steve Swindall returns and Colin Hutton replaces the injured Garry Mountford in the front-row. Bedwas currently top the Welsh Premiership.
Dundee HSFP are on the road to Carmarthen with Glasgow Warriors players Finlay Gillies, Ruairidh Jackson and Taylor Paris, who played for Canada last month, all starting. Jamie Urquhart (exams) and Stewart Walker and Mike Stubbs (work commitments) are all unavailable for the Taysiders for this one in Pool Three.
Tomorrow London Scottish are at home to Llanelli in Pool Six.
