St Andrew’s club celebrates with title bout

THE St Andrew’s Sporting Club will mark its 40th anniversary in January by staging a major championship fight between two Scottish boxers.

In a nod to its opening night in 1973 when legendary duo Ken Buchanan and Jim Watt clashed in an epic British lightweight title fight, club owner Tommy Gilmour is promoting a battle for the vacant Commonwealth light-welterweight belt between Willie Limond and Eddie Doyle.

Glasgow’s Limond, 33, the
ex-Commonwealth lightweight champion, says he will retire if he loses to unbeaten 27-year-old Doyle, from Glenboig.

“I must win this fight, it’s as simple as that,” said Limond. “If I don’t, then there will be nowhere left for me to go. It’s a great opportunity at this stage of my career. I feel stronger at light-welterweight and it’s going to be an honour topping the bill on such a special occasion. Everyone knows about the classic fight between Buchanan and Watt which started it all off. To become a champion again in that ring would be really special.”
