Schools’ Hockey: Double delight for Watson’s Kirsten Peters

HOCKEY: It was a spectacular couple of sporting days for George Watson’s College’s Kirsten Peters. On Thursday, she won the over-16 800m title at the Scottish Schools’ Indoor Athletics Championships at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

On Saturday, she played a true captain’s role by scoring three goals and leading GWC to a 7-2 victory over Strathallan in Scottish Hockey’s Under-18 Indoor Cup final at Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth.

The teams had drawn 2-2 in the pool stage at the preliminaries in Perth last month, but a full-strength Edinburgh side stamped their authority on the final.

With the event clashing with the mid-term school break, Strathallan, unfortunately, had been weakened by the loss of several first-team players and Watson’s dominated from the start.

Catriona McLellan opened the Watson’s goal barrage in the second minute and Kirsten got her first goal of the game four minutes later. Strathallan did enjoy a flurry and got into the match 30 seconds later when Ella Colemen pulled one back to make the scoreline 2-1.

But, with Waverley Miller dictating the play, Watson’s, coached by Linda Clement, were always in control.

Ailie Clapperton made the score 3-1 in the 12th minute
before Ailsa Small slotted home a penalty stroke to make it 4-1 at half time.

Immediately after half-time, Peters went on a scoring spree, completing her hat-trick while McLellan got a second goal as Watson’s surged 7-1 ahead and ended the final as a serious contest. But there was some late consolation for Strathallan with Anni Arthur finding the back of the net to make the final score 7-2.

George Watson’s College: Amy Allard-Dunbar, Kirsten Peters, Waverley Miller, Ailsa Small, Emma Stephen, Ailie Clapperton, Charlotte McCallum, Catriona McLellan, Eilidh Thomson, Marnie Davidson

Strathallan: Celine skinner, Rachael Campbell, Anni Arthur, Hope Whitelaw, Lucy Coleman, Ella Coleman, Raina Dalrymple, Emily Barnes, Abbie Lindsay, Pippa Wood.
