Grange goals give coach Moodie first U-21 win
HOCKEY: The Grange contingent provided all the goals in Scotland’s 4-2 victory over Wales in the Under-21 Celtic Cup in Wrexham yesterday. Striker Matt Connor scored the first and last while club colleague Fraser Sands notched the other two from penalty corners. This result gave new coach Graham Moodie his first win in charge, and it leaves the young Scots in runners-up spot behind eventual winners Ireland.
The Scots controlled the play in the opening exchanges, and in 28 minutes they took the lead when Connor collected the ball inside the circle, beat a defender and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper.
Early in the second half the Scots youngsters doubled their lead, Alan Forsyth winnng the penalty corner and Sands sending a flick high into the Welsh net. Sands extended the Scots’ lead with another high shot into the net from a penalty corner before Wales struck twice in quick succession. The Scots finally sealed the win when Connor was left with a simple tap-in.
