Cricket: Heriot’s seek revenge against Arbroath

If they can beat the weather, Heriot’s are due to take on Arbroath today in the Cricket Scotland Eastern Premier Division, a match-up that brings back memories of a classic encounter between the two in 2010.

Then the sides were in the old SNCL First Division and met at Goldenacre with both battling it out at the top of the table.

The Edinburgh club bowled first, dismissing the visitors for just 101 with Anthony Edington and Andre van Niekirk taking three wickets and Sean Weeraratna taking two.

However, the Arbroath attack was on fire to skittle Heriot’s out for 97 and secure a four-run win.

Arbroath went on to win the First Division title that year with Heriot’s as runners-up.

In that match, Arbroath’s Calvin Burnett was the highest scoring batsman on either side with 36 not out. Since then he has shown even better form against the same opponents.

Last year in the Scottish Cup he scored 113 and took one wicket against them in a 67-run victory at Lochlands meaning the Heriot’s bowlers will be gunning for his scalp this afternoon. So far this summer, Heriot’s have won two and lost two in the league while Arbroath have lost all four with form hard to find for any side given the weather problems.

Another two clubs who played out a thrilling clash in recent times also meet this afternoon with Aberdeenshire, in sixth place hosting second placed Watsonians at Mannofield.

The men from the Granite City will be looking for revenge for a final ball loss to the Myresiders in the SNCL Premier Division less than a year ago. Then, four wickets from Craig Wright saw the hosts all out for 179 and he then went on to hit 28 not out as the wickets fell around him. He and Andy Learmonth finally saw the visitors home off the last ball of their innings.

In the capital, leaders Grange welcome Carlton to Portgower Place in what is usually a closely fought affair.

Indeed, three years ago in Stockbridge the teams ended up tied with Grange’s 209 all out being followed by Carlton’s 209 for eight.

Finally Stoneywood Dyce who are third with three wins out of four completed matches, welcome Forfarshire to Peoples Park.
