Schools golf; Youngsters thrilled by ClubGolf experience

“TODAY was the one of the most fun experiences I’ve had in my life.”

The quote could belong to Alan Dunbar after he won the coveted Amateur Championships at Royal Troon on Saturday.

But in fact it was uttered by ten-year-old Hannah Donohoe after she watched some action and joined in at the ClubGolf activity area during Championship week at the famous Open venue.

More than 120 children from local Ayrshire schools were given some specialist coaching by three PGA Pros from the club, volunteer coaches and ClubGolf Regional Managers, Ann Lang and Mandy Martin.

Hannah, was one of the children who came along with her Troon Primary School friends.

Her class’s golfing experience ranged from those who had been introduced to the game in school via ClubGolf’s introductory game to seasoned campaigners such as nine-year-old Cameron Johnston.

Cameron was given his first club at the age of 18 months and has been a regular at his local driving age since he turned three. “I learnt a lot today and it’s great to have my whole class here playing golf,” said Cameron, who earlier this month finished 31st in the UK Kids Golf European Championships.

Paul Carpenter, PGA Professional at Royal Troon and one of the coaches running the clinics said: “The purpose of these clinics is to make the children enjoy golf in combination with some learning. They are really keen and it was good to see them play with smiles on their faces.

“Some of these children have never really picked up a club before but already they are starting to feel the enjoyment of the game and, hopefully, this will inspire them to continue to play a game that can provide lifelong enjoyment.”
