Schools golf: Clara North faces examination on and off course
CLARA Young (North Berwick High School) is the leading Scottish hope in the SLGA Under-16 Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship at Strathmore on Thursday and Friday.
The 15-year-old, who finished top Scot in fifth place last year, has already played for the Great Britain and Ireland junior team in last year’s Vagliano Trophy.
The one-handicapper is sitting her Standard Grade exams this year – but they are not going to interfere too much with her golfing ambitions. “I’m really lucky because the school is very supportive and allows me time off to play,” she explained.
“I am going to sit two Standard Grade exams at the West of Scotland Sports Institute during the week of the Helen Holm Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship at Troon and one at Tain Academy when I am playing in the Scottish ladies’ Amateur Championship at Tain.”
Clara is helping to maintain a great tradition – Catriona Matthew, Scotland’s top professional, is a former pupil of North Berwick High School.
