Romero says compatriot using Tevez as his caddie was ‘crazy’

EDUARDO Romero reckons fellow Argentinean Andres Romero must have been influenced by alcohol when he asked Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez to caddie for him in the final round of the Open Championship on Sunday.

Though not related, the two Romeros are close friends and the older one, a former Scottish Open champion, also knows Tevez, having played golf with him on a number of occasions back home in Argentina.

After opening his title bid in the Senior Open Championship at Turnberry yesterday with a two-under-par 68 to sit just four shots off the lead, Romero described seeing Tevez caddying for his compatriot at Lytham and watching him shoot an 82 to finish last among the qualifiers as “crazy”.

He added: “Tevez plays golf in Argentina and we have played many times together. But I don’t think he is a great caddie. I would never take Tevez as a caddie because he knows nothing about golf in terms of the lines.

“After six holes, he told Andres he was too tired because the bag was heavy and wanted to quit. I think what happened is that at dinner the night before Andres was probably drunk when Tevez asked him and said it was his dream. Afterwards, Andres realised it was a mistake and asked himself, ‘what have I done?’ But by then it was too late.”

Romero, who recorded his Scottish Open win at Loch Lomond a decade ago, took the gloss off his opening effort with a double-bogey at the last but was still pleased with the start.

“I played fantastic today and I think it was my best round so far this year,” he said, admitting his playing schedule these days is curtailed by business commitments, which include designing a course back home.
