Paul Lawrie lined up for Whitekirk

PAUL Lawrie, Scottish golf’s man of the moment, could be set to be involved in a golf course design project at an East Lothian venue.

The two-time Ryder Cup player has revealed that he is in talks with Whitekirk Golf Club about a project in the pipeline there.

Writing on his website on Friday, Lawrie said: “I left the house at 5.30am this morning to drive down to Whitekirk Golf Club for a meeting about a possible re-design.”

It is believed an official announcement about what is being planned by the owners could be made later this week, but no-one at the club would comment on Lawrie’s visit when contacted yesterday by The Scotsman. “There is nothing we can say at the moment,” we were told by a club spokesman.

Designed by Cameron Sinclair, Whitekirk opened in 1995, since when it has hosted events on both the PGA Mastercard Tour and the PGA EuroPro Tour.

One of the club’s first members was former Hearts manager Jim Jefferies, though he now plays his golf at either Dunbar or Gullane.

Two years ago, Lawrie was lined up by the Muir Group to design an 18-hole course at the Blairs Estate, close to his home in Aberdeen.
