Open display gives boost to Snedeker in Canada

Brandt Snedeker is in confident mood heading into this week’s Canadian Open following his impressive display at Royal Lytham last week.

The American led at the halfway stage of the Open Championship after equalling the lowest score over the first 36 holes in championship history with rounds of 66 and 64 as he sought a maiden major title.

Snedeker was unable to keep up that phenomenal form in the final two days, but he still finished tied for third place with Tiger Woods on three under.

The 31-year-old, who has three PGA Tour titles in his career, is now hoping to build on that performance at the Canadian Open, which begins at Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Ontario tomorrow.

“After last week my game is pretty close to being where it needs to be to win a golf tournament. So I have pretty high expectations this week,” said Snedeker, who is nevertheless not expecting to have an easy time of it.

“We don’t get to play too many traditional golf courses like this. It’s going to be really tough – going to challenge every club in the bag.”

Snedeker finished four shots behind winner Ernie Els at the Open as the South African picked up his fourth major and first since 2007.

Snedeker was full of praise for the 42-year-old, who is also in
action at the Canadian Open, and tipped him for more major success in the future.

“He’s one of the best ball strikers ever. He’s a phenomenal talent. And we knew if he
ever putted well again...” said Snedeker.

“Wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to see him win a couple more, wouldn’t be surprised to see him win a Masters again now. So it’s good to have him back.”

Also in the field this week are three-time major winner Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan and defending champion Sean O’Hair.
