Golf: Gleneagles foiled by waterlogged greens

Unrelenting rain forced play to be abandoned in yesterday’s opening round of the Gleneagles Scottish Championship over the King’s Course.

Waterlogged greens meant play halted at 12.45pm, and almost three hours later PGA officials had to concede that no further play would be possible.

Of the 15 players from a field of 75 who completed their rounds, only Jonny Cliff (Murrayfield) sneaked under the par of 71, by a stroke. Leading on the course is 2003 champion, Chris Kelly, who was two under after 14 holes. Today’s play starts at 7.30am, and it’s hoped the second round will get under way before lunchtime. PGA tournament controller, Roy Murray said: “There was no prospect of getting the course properly playable.”
