Golf: Ewan Scott making his mark in the world

EWAN Scott, from St Andrews, is making his presence felt on a third continent this winter after staying in contention heading into the final round of the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final.

A gold medal winner for Team GB in Australia at the start of the year, the 17-year-old then produced a brace of eye-catching performances in South Africa.

Having now moved on to Mission Hills in China, Scott is rubber-stamping his potential once again in the company of some of the top young talent in the Far East. The Scottish Youths’ champion followed an opening 69 with a level-par 72 to sit two shots off the lead in joint fifth and would have been closer to the pacesetters but for a double-bogey seven at the last.

However, with Singapore’s Marc Ong and Cheng Ssu-Chia from Chinese Taipei still within striking distance, Scott has a chance today to land a hugely significant success.

Fifteen-year-old Cheng, who bogeyed the last for a 73, is bidding to become the first girl to be crowned Faldo Series champion.

Meanwhile, Fraser McKenna’s bid to emulate David Law by winning the Northern Amateur Championship in South Africa came unstuck in the quarter-finals at Randpark.

After returning yesterday morning to wrap up his second-round victory after lightning had stopped play on Wednesday, the Balmore man then went down by 2 and 1 to Pretoria’s Tertius Van Den Berg.

In another uncompleted match from the previous day, Glenbervie’s Fraser Moore lost by two holes in the end to Springbok Teaghan Gauche.
