Golf: David Toms set for US Ryder Cup captaincy

THE United States will unveil their next Ryder Cup captain, possibly David Toms, tomorrow.

Ted Bishop, president of the Professional Golfers’ Association of America, will announce the successor to Davis Love during the NBC network’s morning Today Show.

The 2014 match takes place at Gleneagles and Europe’s captain – almost certainly either Darren Clarke or Paul McGinley – is expected to be named next month.

Toms was not one of Love’s assistants at Medinah, but that may be a point in his favour given the fact that the United States threw away a 10-4 lead.

“It’s one of the highest honours in golf,” the 45-year-old Toms said when asked about the position. “I would hope at some point in time I would get that opportunity.

“It’s the best event in golf and to be able to captain a US team and somehow get a victory, that would certainly be one of the highlights of my career – if not the highlight.”

Jeff Sluman, Scott Verplank, Mike Hulbert and Fred Couples served as vice-captains three months ago, but, although Couples would be a hugely popular choice, he is the current Presidents Cup captain. Tom Watson said at the weekend that he would love the job again in Scotland,

Toms lost only one of his five games on his Ryder Cup debut at The Belfry in 2002, but scored only one point two years later and did not win a game in Ireland in 2006.
