Ewan Scott makes strong start in China

ST ANDREWS teenager Ewan Scott made a promising start in his latest title challenge in China as two of his compatriots were frustrated by the weather in their bid to taste success in South Africa.

Playing in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills, Scott opened with a three-under-par 69 that left the Scottish Youths’ champion in joint sixth, behind Chang Ssu-Chia, a 15-year-old girl from Chinese Taipei.

In South Africa, Balmore’s Fraser McKenna and Fraser Moore of Glenbervie both have unfinished business after lightning stopped play in the second round of the Northern Amateur Championship at Randpark.

Bidding to emulate 2011 winner David Law, McKenna is one up with two to play against Thriston Lawrence but Moore is one down to Teaghan Gauche with three holes to go.

The two other Scots to qualify for the knock-out phase, Newmachar’s Graham Gordon and Jamie Savage of Cawder, both went out in the opening round.

In Spain, James White climbed out of his sickbed to card a fine 71 at Sotogrande, helping Scotland sit in third spot, six shots behind England, after the first round of the European Nations Cup.
