Ewan Scott back in contention in South Africa

Ewan Scott catapulted himself into contention at the halfway stage of the South African Stroke Play Championship with one of the best second-round scores.

Tied for 14th after the first round, the St Andrews 17-year-old was tied for fifth following a five-under-par 67 on day two at the Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa.

Scott is three shots behind South African leader Werner Ferreira, who is on nine under, with Springbok No 1 and defending champion Haydn Porteous
second on eight-under. Bidding to become the first foreign winner of the event since England’s Gary Wolstenholme in 2002, Scott bagged six birdies.

After winning the Scottish Youths’ Championship last year, when he also topped the Scottish Hydro Boys’ Order of Merit, Scott won gold with Team GB at the Australian Youth
Olympic Festival last month.

Balmore’s Fraser McKenna and Adam Dunton of McDonald were the only other Scottish squad players to survive the cut. McKenna shot a second-round 67 to leap into a tie for 35th on one-over, three fewer than
Dunton after his level-par 72.
