Classic Ryder Cup moments, No 7: Seve’s Triumph: 1997

HE DID not hit a shot all week, but Europe’s victory was all about the inspiration of their captain, Seve Ballesteros.

Staged on the continent for the first time, Seve redesigned his home Valderrama course especially for the Ryder Cup and knew every bump and divot. He was here, there and everywhere, handing out advice – and often sandwiches – to his players, scattering spectators as he flitted between matches in his buggy, labelled the world’s only Formula One golf cart.

He courted controversy by omitting Ian Woosnam and Darren Clarke on the first day
but, led by five rookies, Europe swept to a five-point lead after
two days. With Tiger Woods debuting, USA hit back and won the singles, 8-4. But Colin Montgomerie sealed the win with a half against Scott Hoch.
