INVERNESS manager Terry Butcher has urged his players to stop throwing away points after they missed the chance to open up a three-point gap in the race for second place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

Caley Thistle were dominant in their home game against Kilmarnock on Wednesday night, but only had a first-half goal from Nick Ross to show for their efforts before Borja Perez netted a last-minute equaliser with
Killie’s first shot on target.

Inverness have lost last-gasp goals against the likes of St Mirren, Hearts and St Johnstone this season, and Butcher feels they could have wrapped up the runners-up spot with more concentration.

Instead, Inverness travel to Motherwell on Saturday just one point ahead of their hosts.

Butcher said: “That’s seven times we have done that – been in winning positions and conceded a goal late on in the game.

“That’s 14 points we have thrown away. We would have got second spot by now anyway.

“We only have ourselves to blame. There is no-one else. It’s ourselves for not finishing teams off and not doing their jobs.

“I was delighted with the football we played – we played some wonderful football – but all that hard work and effort has only got one point. I’m just so, so annoyed because we should be winning games like that. These are the games that could have
a massive bearing at the end of the season.

“There are eight games to go [to the split] and we are only one point ahead now, and we feel we should be three, definitely.”
