SFA tell Dundee United they can’t do anything about Rangers cup boycott

Charles Green gave his backing to a supporters boycott

DUNDEE UNITED have been told by the SFA that there is nothing they can do to interfere in the planned boycott by Rangers fans ahead of the Scottish Cup clash between the two teams.

Earlier this month, the Tannadice club wrote to Scottish football’s governing body after Rangers chief Charles Green backed supporters’ plans to boycott the match, with United owner Stephen Thompson seeking clarification on a number of issues including the Ibrox side’s right to their share of the gate money if they refused to sell tickets for the match.

SFA chiefs are believed to have informed United that the Third Division side have not breached any rules or articles by making the decision. Thompson had been subject to criticism from sections of the Rangers support following his attitude towards the club’s application to rejoin the SPL, and had enraged Ibrox fans by refusing them refunds when a match at Tannadice between the two teams in November 2009 was abandoned due to adverse weather conditions.

However, the SFA may have to step in should no agreement be reached over ticket pricing for the tie.

Charles Green had previously promised to give his club’s share of the gate money from the match to charity.
