Gary Hooper to stay at Celtic as Norwich bid fails
NEIL Lennon last night announced that Gary Hooper would be staying at Celtic, as the club managed to keep suitors Norwich City at bay in the January transfer window.
As speculation raged in the closing hours of transfer deadline day, there were reports that Norwich had returned with a fifth bid for the striker, having failed with previous bids which gradually increased to around £7 million – still considerably short of the figure Celtic believe their top goalscorer is worth.
However, Lennon responded via his Twitter account, declaring: “Contrary to reports there have been no fresh bids for Gary and even if there are they will be rejected..he is NOT for sale.”
Celtic were also set to secure the signing of young Sweden goalkeeper Vikor Noring from Trelleborgs. The 20-year-old was pictured entering Parkhead for talks and club officials were hopeful of getting the deal done in time for the 11pm deadline.
Meawnhile, Dundee United, who lost then gained a manager this week as Peter Houston exited and Jackie McNamara arrived, received an offer from Sheffield United for Johnny Russell, which was dismissed as it fell well below the club’s valuation.
There had been no movement at Hibernian by 10pm. Gregg Wylde had been tipped to make a loan move from Bolton, but he broke the news via Twitter that he would be staying at his parent club. Hibs were still working at bringing in a winger last night as the deadline approached.
St Johnstone signed Mehdi Abeid and Gwion Edwards on loan from Newcastle United and Swansea respectively, while Kevin Moon was released.
Aberdeen managed to tie up central defender Mark Reynolds on a four-and-a-half year deal following his release from Sheffield Wednesday and also signed goalkeeper Dan Twardzik on an 18-month contract from Calcio Como after being granted international clearance.
Dundee brought in Nottingham Forest midfielder David Morgan, 18, on loan.
