Capital One Cup: Leeds, Crewe and Middlesbrough progress

Leeds United and Crewe coasted into the second round of the Capital One Cup with comfortable home victories.

Luciano Becchio opened the scoring for Leeds, tapping the ball home after just 19 minutes, with Luke Varney doubling the advantage six minutes later. David Norris then made it three after 66 minutes, rifling the ball home from 18 yards after a pass from Varney.

Michael Hector then presented the home side with an easy opportunity to make it four, handling the ball in the area after 69 minutes, with Ross McCormack converting the spot kick to seal a 4-0 win before being replaced by new signing El Hadji Diouf.

Doubles from Max Clayton and Mathias Pogba helped Crewe Alexandra to a 5-0 win over Hartlepool at Gresty Road with Ajay Leitch-Smith also on target for the Railwaymen.

Middlesbrough edged into the next round, winning 2-1 against Bury at Gigg Lane, with Marvin Emnes (32) and Grant Leadbitter (61) securing their passage.
