Tom English: Bill Miller set to enter a very strange land
ON A day of many statements, the first of them came in early morning when Rangers announced their intention to pay tribute to their 12th man – the long-suffering supporters – by retiring the number 12 jersey forever more. It was a heartfelt gesture of thanks, a measure of appreciation more redolent of schmaltzy American sport than hard-nosed Glasgow football. He’s not making the decisions yet, but you could imagine Bill Miller, the “Tennessee tow-truck tycoon” as he has come to be known in these parts, approving of the sentiment. Rangers will be forever Govan, but the club has moved closer to wrapping itself in the Stars and Stripes under the ownership of a man who, it’s safe to assume, knows a lot more about the history of NASCAR than he does about the legend of Nacho Novo.
