Travel readers vote Scottish hotels among the best
The Scottish tourist industry has received a major boost after two hotels were voted among the best in Britain.
Gleneagles in Perthshire has been named the best UK rural hotel by a leading travel magazine. Readers of Travel also voted The Glasshouse in Edinburgh runner-up behind London’s luxurious St Pancras Renaissance as the best UK city hotel.
The five-star Gleneagles resort near Auchterarder – where the Ryder Cup will be played in 2014 – boasts Scotland’s only two-Michelin star restaurant, run by chef Andrew Fairlie.
The readers’ awards were said to have generated an “avalanche of responses”.
“Gleneagles… is quite simply the most stunning hotel I have ever stayed in,” said John Fulton from Leicester. “A night here is like a holiday in itself.”
The Three Chimneys restaurant on Skye was named “unsung hero” for “its great food and unbelievable setting”.
The Glasshouse was said to have a “retro 70s vibe, behind the gothic facade of this bijou boutique”. The worldwide city hotel award went to Raffles in Singapore. Barcelona was named best European city break and New York the best worldwide.
Greece won the top European beach destination and the Caribbean claimed the worldwide beach crown. The UK was named top European “active” destination, with a special mention for the attractions of the Highlands.
