Trailer of the week: Man of Steel
Six years after the last reboot, could Zach Snyder finally deliver a worthy addition to the Superman canon?
What is it?
Zack Snyder, director of 300 and Watchmen, helms a new version of Superman, with Henry Cavill as Clark Kent.
Does it look any good?
On first glance, at least, this looks more promising than Bryan Singer’s 2006 attempt, Superman Returns. In fact, the footage looks rather like the early scenes from Batman Begins – a bearded hero on a lonely journey of self-discovery (make of this what you will, but the producer of the film is Batman director Christopher Nolan). We see Cavill working on a fishing boat and, intriguingly, hitch-hiking. Why a man who can fly needs to hitch-hike is not explained, but it all adds to the intrigue – particularly since virtually none of the familiar Superman elements is here. There’s no Daily Planet, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Kryptonite – in fact, nothing to suggest this is a Superman movie at all until we see him flying through the air at the end – and even then it’s from a distance, just to drive home the trailer’s determination to keep things enigmatic. It’s worked. We want to see more.
When is it out?
Next year.
