SCOTLAND continues to bask in sunshine this afternoon, and forecasters predict that temperatures could match the new record for March, which was set yesterday.

A temperature of 22.8C (73F), the highest in the UK, was recorded at Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire, beating the previous March record of 22.2C in 1965.

This means it was warmer than more southerly parts of Europe such as Barcelona, Nice, Mallorca and Faro.

Temperatures recorded throughout the morning have shown the weather could have a head-start on yesterday.

Brendan Jones, a forecaster at MeteoGroup, said the record high could possibly be overtaken today in the north east.

He said the midday temperature for Fyvie Castle was 19.5C, slightly higher than the 17.7C recorded there at the same time yesterday.

The warmest place in the UK so far today is Kinlochewe in Wester Ross at 19.6C.

Mr Jones said: “Scotland is well on course to get to similar values in places today. There will be mid to high temperatures across many places in Scotland. It could get close to yesterday’s record temperature for March in one or two spots, possibly higher. It will be localised if that does happen.

“The far north has been fairing extremely well, with it being 18C in Wick which is quite unusual for this time of day at this time of year.”

The central belt will still enjoy a heatwave but temperatures are more likely to reach 18C or 19C, he said.
