Police recover heroine’s stolen medals
Stolen First World War medals have been returned to the Scottish family of a forces nurse.
Elsie Menzies – who was born in Craigellachie, on Speyside, in 1894, according to her family – was honoured for service in France in 1919. Her medals were taken from her family’s home in Lossiemouth, Moray.
Police found them when recovering stolen property from a thief they were investigating in connection with crimes in the Aberdeen and Moray areas.
Officers appealed to the public to help find the owner as they thought they would be of sentimental value.
Constable Kate Barnett said: “I’m very pleased to report that, with the assistance of the media and the public, we have tracked down the owner of these two medals who lives in the Lossiemouth area.
“Elsie’s family are very proud of the efforts which saw her receiving these medals for her service to her country and are delighted they have been recovered.”
