‘Mummy porn’ novel Fifty Shades of Grey gets musical at the Fringe

A PARODY musical of the sado-masochistic erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, put together at two weeks’ notice, is set to hit the Fringe stage this weekend.

The show is being written and produced by the team behind Baby Wants Candy, the improvised musical show that has been a hit here and world wide. It is backed by Marshall Cordell, the US businessman who has helped finance shows such as Spamalot on Broadway.

Cordell’s lawyers flew into Edinburgh this week to advise on any copyright issues. The film rights to the book, which has outsold the entire Harry Potter book series, have sold for more than £3 million.

The musical is likely to go on stage at one of the Assembly venues as early as this weekend.

The Scotsman comedy critic Kate Copstick has signed on as an artistic adviser. It will open to the sound of a whip and woman’s moans, but is set in a book group of middle-aged women eagerly discussing the so-called “mummy porn”.

Its working title is Fifty Shades of Grey: the musical.
