REACTIONS ranged from despair to indignation as Hearts fans and other football followers took to Twitter.

Thomas Main queried the whereabouts of senior club officials, tweeting: “Where is romanov? He can’t hide with this disaster going on at hmfc.”

Frank Russell agreed, saying: “It would boost efforts by Hearts fans if Romanov showed some interest in keeping the club alive. We are trying our best, is he?”

There were novel ideas about securing funding, with Gavin Murray asking the star of The Apprentice for a cash injection: “@Lord_Sugar fancy buying Hearts?”

But for many fans it was the grim reality of the situation that shocked them most.

Andrew Ward tweeted: “Flatmates laughed when I said I would cry if hearts ceased to exist… They don’t know how much the club means to me! Love hearts!”

Ian Horsburgh typed: “Sitting up all night watching #Hearts DVDs. Utterly sick with todays horrendous news.”

Jamie Dickson was also despondent, saying: “Gonna go home, get p***ed, listen to the Hearts song and reminisce former glorys by perusing through old Jam Tarts memorabilia #emotional.”

Lawrence Broadie, former head of marketing at Tynecastle, tweeted: “Selling out the next three home games tomorrow would raise 250k, which is a start. Can Hearts fans achieve that in one day? That’s the challenge.”

Amal Daher noted: “On way to work & saw someone has a hearts poster in their window. This is what we need people!! Club needs us all now more than ever!”

A girl going by the name “Serial Sock Thief” said: “You know what’s horrible? Sitting here thinking of ways in which to plead with fellow Hearts fans to save our club. Not a great feeling.”

Ritchie Callaghan declared; “Heart of Midlothian will be my team no matter what! The happiness and memories they have gave me! Gorgie rules!!! Save Our Hearts.”

Labour peer George Foulkes tweeted: “Hearts fans should rally to support the club, buying shares and tickets for next home games, on understanding Romanov stands by his promises … I am doing everything I can to keep the club going and to find a secure future.”

Hearts digital media executive Phil Turnbull was buoyed by yesterday’s response. He said: “Phenomenal stuff from Hearts supporters and staff today. Unprecedented. Let’s keep it going. We need to keep it going.”
