Dundee pays tribute to local heroes

About 200 soldiers marched through the streets of Dundee yesterday to mark their return home after a six-month tour of Afghanistan.

The 19th Regiment Royal Artillery (The Highland Gunners) completed the first of two homecoming parades in Dundee. The second will take place tomorrow in Inverness where the regiment received the Freedom of the City in 1999.

Marching soldiers were accompanied by music from the regiment’s pipes and drums as they made their way through the city centre.

Their tour came to an end last month and they returned to their permanent base at Bhurtpore barracks in Tidworth Camp in Wiltshire.

They were deployed as part of 12 Mechanized Brigade and took on various duties across Helmand province, including providing support for five battlegroups and operating from mobility vehicles such as Jackals. They were also involved in the mentoring of Afghan troops.
