Scottish independence: Tory adviser to have ‘key role’ in Union campaign

The Conservatives will have a “key role” in the campaign to keep Scotland in the UK, according to the Scottish party’s new director of communications.

Former Scotsman editor John McLellan, 50, will advise party leader Ruth Davidson on strategy and insisted a strong Tory party is “badly needed” in Scotland as an alternative to the left-wing mainstream parties.

Mr McLellan said: “Ruth is doing a tremendous job, not only in arguing the Scottish Conservative case, but in reshaping perceptions of Scottish Conservatism.

“As the referendum approaches, the party has a key role in ensuring the benefits of the Union and the implications of separation are properly explored.

“It is no secret I strongly believe Scotland has benefited and will continue to benefit from being a strong part of the United Kingdom. A strong, modern Scottish Conservative voice has never been so badly needed, as the SNP and Labour slug it out on the Left.”

Mr McLellan left The Scotsman in April, having also served as editor of its sister titles Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News.

Ms Davidson said: “I am delighted to welcome someone of John’s standing to the team.

“The Scottish Conservatives are changing and putting forward a bold vision. I am looking forward to working closely with him in delivering the change I want to see in our party and our country.”
