Zero-hour fix

STATISTICS on the large and increasing problem of underemployment make grim reading, but the reality is even worse (your report, 29 November).

Part-time jobs are often also particularly insecure, and hours may vary hugely from week to week.

Growing numbers of people are on zero-hour contracts, in which their employers give them no guarantee of weekly hours. And, to compound it all, working tax credits, which were designed to help working people on low incomes, are only accessible for those working at least 30 hours a week.
