Wrongheaded
AN OBVIOUS feature distinguishing a whimbrel from its close relative the curlew is the prominent pale stripe on the crown of its head. You could, therefore, have hardly chosen a better photo of a bird showing its crown (your report, 30 January) to demonstrate that the illustrated specimen wasn’t a whimbrel.
