Torture on trial
Brian Allan’s letter (28 January) raises the topic of the “torture debate”. One aspect of this debate which has so far been omitted is the problem of Guantanamo Bay, and the keeping of innocent people shackled outside legal jurisdiction for up to ten years.
Many of these people have yet to be tried and found guilty. Personally, if I was accused of a terrorist act of which I was entirely innocent, I would rather be waterboarded for a couple of days than shackled for years on end in Guantanamo Bay.
Locking people up for a decade outside any legal system should be included in the US’s definition of torture. On this, I am sure, George Orwell would agree.
