Elizabeth McCrone makes a spirited defence of decisions made by Historic Scotland to list modern buildings (Platform, 23 July) but she chooses some poor examples.
While the buildings erected in Edinburgh's George Square in the 1960s may be of some architectural merit, the vandalism of destroying one of the most perfect Georgian squares in the country cannot either be justified or forgiven.
I suspect that most of us would have rather had the square preserved and the buildings erected somewhere else. Then we could have enjoyed both old and modern architectural gems.
And although I am sure that the Commonwealth Pool has been refurbished in a most pleasing manner, one cannot escape the fact that a brand-new replacement for the Commonwealth Pool would have been cheaper, available earlier for training purposes and more fit for purpose.
