Selfish attitude

It’s not nice to see Johann Lamont pull the ladder up after herself, and probably a number of similarly aged MSPs who benefited from the grants system in the 1970s (your report, 18 
December). Shame on you, Mrs Lamont.

The problem with universities at present is not under-funding, but too many people actually going there – a direct consequence of the last Labour government’s policy of pushing 50 per cent of young people to attend university.

Let’s get back to quality 
courses for academically 
qualified students. That would soon reduce the numbers of people who should really be at university and solve the question of tuition fees.

In fact, we may even be able to afford to offer grants to more students, although probably only after independence as London Labour would never allow Mrs Lamont to do that.
