Scottish senate
James Allan (Letters, 17 July) raises the question of an independent Scotland having a second chamber of parliament.
It seems to me that we should stick with a single-chamber parliament. But that need not stop us from having a senate, which could accommodate people of experience and influence and those whom we wish to honour.
It could discuss the business before parliament and offer advice. Where its members consider that legislation is needed, it could make suggestions to parliament – which should be taken seriously, but would not be binding.
The old Royal High School, with its present debating chamber, could be a good venue for a senate.
